Concurrency

• Interleaved processing
  • Concurrent execution of processed is interleaved in a single CPU.
• Parallel processing
  • Processed are concurrently executed in multiple CPUs.

Why Transaction Management(Concurrency Control) Necessary?

The lost update (Dirty write) problem - WW

• 두 트랜잭션이 같은 item에 접근해서 interleaved하게 처리할 때 item value가 incorrect(overwritten)되는 것.
  • T1, T2가 item X값을 변경시킬 때, T1의 연산결과인 X가 T2에 의해 lost될 때 (overwritten)

The temporary update (Dirty read) problem - WRa

• 한 트랜잭션이 fail 나서 rollback해야 하는데, 이때 다른 트랜잭션에서 그 item을 읽은 경우

  → temporary incorrect value ( dirty data )

  • T1이 fail나서 X를 예전 값으로 되돌려야 하는데, 이때 T2가 X를 read해버림 (dirty read)

The incorrect summary problem

• 한 트랜잭션이 aggregate function of records 중인데 다른 트랜잭션이 그 records를 update 하는 경우

  • T2가 sum records(X, Y 포함)를 하고 있는데 T1에서 X와 Y값을 update함
  • T2가 X는 update된 값을 읽고, Y는 update되기 전의 값을 읽어 incorrect summary problem을 유발함

• Unrepeatable Read - RW(R)

  • Transaction T1에서 item값을 두 번 읽는데, T2에서 item값을 변경시켜 두 번째 읽은 T1의 item값과 첫 번째 읽은 T1의 item값이 서로 다른 경우
    • 예약 시스템, 빈 자리라고 해서 예약하는데 그 사이에 다른 사람이 예약 완료하는 경우

How to Schedule Transactions?

• T1~Tn의 Transactions의 operations들을 ordering하는 것
  • The operations of Ti can be interleaved in the schedule
  • The operations of Ti must appear in the same order in S
• Serial Schedule
  • NOT interleaved
  • 스케쥴 내에서 모든 트랜잭션들이 순차적으로 일어날 때
  • T1 → T2 or T2 → T1
